Youri Zoon Coaching Week in Tarifa 2014

After a really successful camp in Brasil back in September… we decided to add in another last minute coaching week with Youri Zoon before the end of the year… and as it’s a place he visits frequently and knows well, and it’s easy to travel to, we decided on Tarifa as the ideal location for our last camp of the year.

Youri Zoon Camp Tarifa

Tarifa is known as Europe’s wind capital… and we certainly got a lot of it… we also got quite a bit of rain to go with it but that was not going to dampen our motivation for the week! With a really cool mix people, a really young and motivated group, we all arrived to Arte Vida surf center and hotel the last week of November… ready to fight our way through the rain and learn as much as possible over the following seven days.

Youri Zoon Camp Tarifa

Arte Vida is a cute hotel, really simple but with a great location right on the beach. The staff are amazing and helpful, and made us feel really at home during our stay. Hector who runs the Tarifa surf Center was always helping us out, supplying us with surf boards when the wind was too light to kite, and sorting us out with kites when we needed different sizes etc. A great place for lessons and rentals in Tarifa.  The hotel only has about 10 rooms, so it was perfect for us as we pretty much took over the whole place for the week. Breakfasts over looking the ocean, and a great view to watch while we waited for the wind to kick in.

We had a few good sessions directly in front of the hotel… and then moved down to the lagoon whenever the tide was right… always looking for the best conditions possible. We had a combination of  5 guys and 3 girls for the coaching… Youri spent some time going over the theory, what each person wanted to work on. Then spending time on the water with each one, pushing them to learn and keep trying and to stay motivated. Although the conditions we had were definitely not the easiest, everyone  did good and we got a decent amount of time on the water. On the days where is was not so windy we went to the cable park for the day, did some surfing, and even a good cross fit coaching session with Youri.

We moved around a lot in the evenings.. heading for tapas, pizzas at Tribu, great meat at Vaca loca, and some great sushi and drinks at Banti on the last night.

Youri Zoon Camp Tarifa

To sum it up, not the easiest of conditions, but our great coach Youri Zoon still  managed to make sure people got the most out of themselves and the conditions… Tarifa is always good fun, so much to do when off the water also. We had good fun, lots of laughs, and got to know some amazing people…

Thanks to Isabeau and family, Jon, Manue, Cherryfat,Valentin, Christian,Rover,Pawel, Adrien, Kseniya,Sveti for joining us on the camp, Hector and everyone at Arte Vida for looking after us.. and to the coach Youri for another great camp!

Youri Zoon coaching week Brasil

We love to travel and discover new places… and some places we fall more in love with than others… Such was the case when we arrived on a warm and windy night to Uruau, Brasil.

Its’s actually pretty breezy to get over there. With only a 6 hour flight from Lisbon, we landed at Fortaleza just as the sun had gone down, and the city lights could be seen glowing endlessly across the horizon.

Passport control can be a little slow, but with some patience, we eventually had our board bags loaded in the pick- up and were driving about one hour south, to the small village know as Uruau.

As we arrived and unloaded, the wind was blowing strong, the air was warm, and we were feeling happy. A nice cold beer on our terrace, listening to the ocean, and watching the palm trees sway back and forth. We were in love with Brasil from the very first moment. We woke that next morning and took a little stroll down the beach to PRO KITE BRASIL.. The place that was to become our hang out spot for the next 7 days. They offer great rooms overlooking the beach and lagoon. Nicely done, great style, and a hammock to chill in while you wait for the wind to pick up. Breakfast is served downstairs, where you get the best fresh fruit, coffees, omelettes and juices. Enough to keep you running full for the whole day!

Be prepared to become and early riser when you are in Brasil… like SERIOUSLY early. We often found ourselves up and ready to go at 5.30 am. The sun is up early, and this means that you generally will be too. So by the time 9 am rolls around, you are pretty much ready to hit the water. Your day will reach a productivity level here that you never thought was possible!

Youri Zoon Coaching Week Brasil

We were a group of 10 people, here for a freestyle coaching week with Youri Zoon. A totally random mix of guys and girls from South Africa, Australia, Austria, France and Denmark, plus our amazing photographer Sveta from Russia.. and me. Purpose of the week: for each person to push themselves and with Youri’s help, learn as much as possible on the water in these 7 days. No pressure! We were also on a mission to have as much fun as possible in the process :)

Youri Zoon Coaching week Brasil

The spot is beautiful as you can imagine. At Pro kite Brasil, you can find the centre and kite school,  a great pool to hang out in, and the Bassi Brasil restaurant where Cheffi will cook you up the best Italian food ever. In front of you, the Ocean lays out before you, and slightly to the left you will find the fresh water lagoon. At first sight, you may think it seems pretty small, but once you get used to it, you will love this awesome little lagoon!

Being on a coaching week, we all pretty much spent most of our day on the water, working on our progression, with guidance from The Boss :) There were a LOT of hard crashes, which would require doses of pain killers and caipirinhas in the evenings in order to recover…. but each morning, everyone was fresh, full power and ready to go, ready to give 100% on the water again.

Youri Zoon coaching week Brasil

Uruau is a pretty quiet spot… don’t expect crowded beaches and crazy nightlife. DO expect a cozy and friendly vibe, wonderful food, perfect wind, unreal sunsets, and some pretty awesome water balloon fights and pool parties! (just be sure to put your laptops away before they get started on this!)

When you find a quiet moment, its worth going on a little walk into town, and heading to the little old lady who makes the most delicious Acai bowls. You can also stock up in town at the supermarket for anything else that you need.

Want a bit of a change of scene? We took a buggy ride along the beach to the next town along, Beberibe, for some dinner and drinks.. a great ride along the coastline by night.

Youri Zoon coaching week Brasil

I only got to stay for 7 nights in this amazing place, but I could have easily stayed for many more. (I did try to change my ticket!) Warm winds, beautiful people, lots of laughing, plenty of caipirinhas, beach fires, night swims, and a ton of time kiting and progressing. THIS is a place to be visited!

Thanks to our incredible coach, Youri Zoon, for his patience and motivation.

Thanks to all the team at Pro Kite Brasil and BassiBrasil… Rikki, Cheffi, Giulia and the rest of the team.

And thanks to all the crew who travelled from all over the world to join us for the week; Julian, Jerome, Jonas, Brayden, Oliver, Sabrina, Bianca…

All photos by our amazing photographer, Svetlana Romantsova, for catching it all on camera… watch for the edit coming soon..

Butterfly Effect Tarifa 2014

The Butterfly Effect Tarifa 2014!

By | News | No Comments

After many months of preparations we were incredibly happy when last Friday morning, 8th of August, the day had finally arrived, and we were down at Tangana beach, setting up the event site for the first ever Butterfly Effect Event in Tarifa.

Tati and Gemma get the gift bags ready

8 am at Tangana is a beautiful time to be there… peace and quiet, the sun gently coming up, and only us setting up our tents and preparing our boards. A big contrast to the huge party that we managed to get going there only a few hours later! Whilst setting up our gear, I had a little think back to why we had started doing this, and what really motivated us to see this amazing women’s event come to Tarifa.

The amazing Set up

I had first come across the Butterfly Effect several years ago in Maui, and had loved seeing these images of hundreds of women getting together to enjoy and share their passion  for water and the ocean.  The Butterfly Effect was founded in Maui 8 years ago by Tatiana Howard, and she has been working incredibly hard these last years to take these events and spread the Aloha across the world, including Cabarete, Lake Garda, Tahiti,Dakhla and many other locations. It’s just a good vibe, happy spirit , type of event. It’s not a competition, or anything of the sort. Just a chance for women to get to together in the ocean, surf, kite , windsurf, SUP, enjoy themselves, learn new things, share it with their friends, and share their ocean passion.

So it was a great feeling to finally be setting up the event on the day, with Tatiana Howard , the BE founder, and her boyfriend Francesco also here in Tarifa to help create this event, alongside Maria Malo, founder of brand Mala Mujer, also together working hard to make it all happen.

the registration team

We were initially unsure of how many girls we would get to sign up for our BE Tarifa event, so we were so happy when ended up with over 50 butterflies signed up! Once our event site was ready to go, with our beautiful Indonesian tent from Eveni Idea , and our SUP boards were all in place… we welcomed all the girls with a great Yoga warm up sessions, from our beautiful resident yogi Sara Martin Blanco. Yoga mats were all set up on the waters edge, and the sun was up but the temperature was not too warm just yet… we had a great yoga class, enjoying the calmness that was still found on valdvaqueros beach… before the crowds arrived for the day.

Once the yoga was done and we were all feeling calm and focused, Tatiana gave everyone a briefing about the SUP excursion. For many girls this was their first time on a SUP board, so we all learn the basics, what to do and what not, a few words from our guides, the lovely guys from OZU TARIFA, and we were ready to hit the water!

IMG_8902-2

A most perfect day for a SUP excursion, just a light breeze, and the ocean was a most beautiful shade of turquoise, we all went paddling together for the next hours down across Punta Paloma.

IMG_8915-2IMG_8967

Once we were back on land , it was time for our delicious paella lunch that had been prepared by Tangana Tarifa.  Together with Coronita, who were also supporting our event, we  all got some chill time in the tent, accompanied by gentle live music of Mar Negra.

After lunch, Tatiana showed us all the Hula, the meaning behind it all, and we all got a chance to learn this beautiful piece of Hawaiian tradition.

IMG_9351

For the afternoon, the beach started to fill up and the crowds started to arrive. We got ready for our afternoon activities and started with an amazing zumba class from Lisa.. so so much fun! Everyone dancing away to the beats in the middle of the beach.. Thanks Lisa for that amazing class!  Followed by windsurfing clinic from Maria Jose at Tarifa Windsurfing  That was great, a good chance for girls who kite a lot but had never tried windsurfing before.  A great explanation on the beach, followed by a chance to give it a go in the ocean, we laughed a lot.

IMG_9411

Tatiana and Francesco also offered the girls a good talk and explanation about strapless wave riding techniques, which was a great opportunity for the girls to sit in on, listen and learn.

By the afternoon, the coronitas were flowing, our great DJ was set up, and then joined by the live “batucada” drumming later in the afternoon. The beach was packed, everyone was dancing, and we realised what a great, fun event this had been. So many girls had come to join us, from all over the place.. Switzerland, belguim, Spain, France, so nice to see all ages together having fun and getting into this!

IMG_9588IMG_9503IMG_9470

After a lot of work and time and effort, we had managed to create this beautiful , fun event, and thanks to all the people who really helped put effort and make this happen! It would never have been possible if it weren’t for the joint effort and support that we received from all over!

So now its over for another year… but one thing for sure, the BE Tarifa will be back for 2015, and we are certain that it will just get better and better every year! Thanks to everyone for joining us , and see you next year!

The team get together for 5 days of wind and sunshine…
From 4th to 8th of December, we were happy to have previous World Champions Kari Schibevaag and Abel Lago join us in Tarifa for our 5 day coaching trip.
The event took place in the lovely Arte Vida Hotel and Surf Centre. Lovely comfortable rooms overlooking the Los Lances beach in Tarifa, Arte Vida is a great place to come and stay! We had our breakfast and lunch at the hotel each day, enjoying the warm sunshine and beautiful views.

Our amazing Yoga guru Sara gave us wonderful yoga classes on the beach in the mornings and evenings, which let us prepare our bodies for the physical challenge of so many hours on the water!

The great and diverse mix of people from Switzerland, Belguim, Spain, Germany and Norway all came together for this coaching week. We scored good on the forecast, and had some great days of levate wind, and nice warm sunshine! Its amazing that Tarifa can still offer up such great wind and weather in the wintertime! Kari and Abel made sure that everyone was taken to the best spots depending on the wind each day. We moved from Getares, to Caños de Meca, to Valdevaqueros and Bolonia, so pretty much managed to see all of the best spots! We got loads of time on the water, great photo sessions, and great coaching for everyone.

Our evenings were spent out and about in Tarifa town, checking out some of the best cafés , bars and restaurants! Tapas and beers, amazing mojitos , and great nights out… This group made the most out of everything that Tarifa has to offer us!

Dont forget that we will be organzing regular coaching weeks in Tarifa, so if you would like to come and join us on the next week, drop us an email on info@kiteboardingcamps.com

An amazing girls event!

The Butterfly Effect is a movement which bring together and empowers women in watersports. A chance for girls to get together and enjoy 7 days of Kiting, SUP, hula dancing and loads more!

This is the first year that we have hosted this event in Dakhla, and we hope to do many more! Such a great change to get to know other girls, and at the same time explore and discover the Dakhla region of Morocco!

We laughed so so much, and though we were slightly unlucky with the wind for several days (which is highly unlikely for August!) we still managed to have an amazing time.

We all stayed at the Dakhla Surf House, which is a great and cosy environment!
